The school encourages good attendance and punctuality because children who attend school regularly learn most effectively. Dormston prides itself upon having a good attendance record and our target for every child is 95% attendance in an academic year.
The school has an Attendance Officer who works with parents, pupils and staff to encourage good attendance among all children. The Attendance Officer (Mrs Wade) will contact home on the first day of absence if we have not received a message from a parent/responsible adult. We regularly run panel meetings to discuss attendance with parents, and establish how the school can best support parents with whom we are anxious to work.
The Pastoral Managers (Mr Whitehouse and Mr Mifsud) support the Attendance Officer with particular responsibility for pupil punctuality to school each day.
We also work closely with the Education Welfare Service to encourage good attendance. During long term absence, work can be arranged for pupils and sent home.
Ultimately if children are not in school, they cannot learn. The school therefore actively discourages holidays taken in term time and the Headteacher follows a procedure for authorising holiday absence which has been approved by the governing body. |
