Before we can begin working with pupils we have to identify their needs. This begins very early, often in Year 6 before pupils arrive here.
Before entry:
Early contact with parents and pupils as well as primary schools.
Discussions with the area SEN Co-ordinator from the Learning Support Service about individual pupils
Testing of pupils to provide information on reading and spelling ages.
Key Stage 3
Pupils are assessed at Dormston for a range of skills; a learning skills profile is developed and a programme drawn up to provide support across the curriculum.
Typically, pupils with reading ages below 8.5 are withdrawn for extra work on reading and spelling. In Year 9 this includes personal challenges designed for practising key skills.
Lunchtime support through ‘fun’ and an independent learning computer programme develops social, literacy and numeracy skills.
Stars Club is available after school three times per week for pupils who need extra help.
Key Stage 4
Pupils can opt to do fewer GCSEs and work on Club 2000 personal challenges leading to the Bronze Asdan Youth award. A Certificate of Achievement in Life Skills is also offered for suitable students while others work towards a Wider Key Skills qualification. These courses all prepare youngsters well for work or college post 16.
Opportunities to receive support with coursework, record of achievement and key skills are also given.
Some pupils may be able to opt for extra work experience or a college placement for one day per week.
Support in the classroom from LSAs continues
Both Key Stages
Each pupil working with us is included on the SEN action list either at School Action, Action Plus or with a full statement.
Twice yearly, we set targets for pupils. These ensure steady progress and form the pupils’ Individual Education Plans.
Reading and Spelling ages are tested twice yearly.
The Leader of Learning Support contributes to reports and attends all parents’ evenings.
Parents are a vital part of the support we offer to pupils at every stage.
